Process SelfCheck™ -- Introduction
The K12TW SelfCheck™ is based on the Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (CobiT®) QuickStart developed by the IT Governance Institute. The SelfCheck™ looks at thirty two (32) defined IT processes that are critical to the educational organization’s ability to govern IT effectively. The thirty two processes are divided up into four responsibility domains: Plan and Organize, Acquire and Implement, Deliver and Support, and Monitor and Evaluate.

The Plan and Organize (PO) domain is concerned with strategy and tactics which influence how IT can best support the organization’s goals and objectives. The Acquire and Implement (AI) domain covers identifying, procuring, and implementing solutions in support of the organization’s goals and objectives. The Deliver and Support (DS) domain entails the actual delivery and support of technological solutions across the organization. Finally, the Monitor and Evaluate (ME) domain addresses the need to maintain quality and compliance in the context of governance and control. Together, these four domains represent the full spectrum of governing and managing IT in a service oriented environment: from area of responsibility to individual processes to activities.

In the context of the SelfCheck™, the aforementioned domains provide a means for establishing a baseline measure of where the organization currently stands with respect to governing and managing IT in support of the organizations goals and objectives. Furthermore, the domains provide four areas of responsibility common to all IT operations with which management can ascertain where improvements might be made. The output of the SelfCheck is a maturity level based upon the research and practice based CobiT® Capability Maturity Model (CMM). Your organization’s maturity level therefore becomes the baseline with which you can measure all future improvement efforts. Such efforts will provide opportunities to reduce and/or contain costs, improve efficiencies, provide better and more direct services in support of the organization, and communicate effort and results throughout the entire organization.

Think of the SelfCheck™ as the first step in ensuring your ability to provide technological solutions that support the attainment of organizational goals and objectives. The journey starts here. Happy travels!
